Win a FREE 12x18 Fine Art Print of Mount Rainier
I'm Troy Mason, an avid mountaineer, rock climber, and hiker, and I take my camera
almost everywhere I go. I enjoy making images in out-of-the-way places that
most people don't have the opportunity to visit. Remote mountain peaks are my favorite
subject, and I prefer black and white and long exposure shots for the starkness
and lack of distraction.
I admire the work of the great Ansel Adams, Galen Rowell, & Robert Capa. I was inspired by my grandfather, who always had a camera to his eye and gave me the initial spark.
My best images come from previsualization and intentional creation. The shot can be on-the-fly as I'm hiking or climbing, but should provide a feeling and a thought that I can translate at home. I often use neutral density filters for long exposures. I use Lightroom, Photoshop, and SilverFX Pro to create the FEELING I had when I snapped the shutter.
I shoot with a Nikon DSLR body. I use a large variety of lenses, but my favorites are a 20mm prime, a 24 to 120mm, and a 200-500mm. I like Manfrotto tripods, a variety of ND filters, and Peak Design to anchor the camera to my pack. A typical light kit for a climb would be my camera body, the 24-120 lens, and a filter. On a hike or backback trip I might carry one or two more lenses, a tripod, and more filters.
